GUESS WORD


Guess Word as the name implies, is a game all about guessing words. Your computer will randomly pick a secret word (based on your set of options) and you must guess what it is. Guessing the secret word is a matter of strategy and logical thinking and quite simple: just type in your own valid words, and check the corresponding clues as you proceed. Each word will be compared to the secret word and clues about the letters in your own word will be revealed. Continue by entering new words based on the clues given.

Keys

Use the keyboard to type in your word for matching against the secret word.
  • Type any valid word (even a word shorter than the secret word).
  • Press the [Enter] key to see if your word matches the secret word and to get clues.
  • The word must be at least 3 letters long.
  • Use [Backspace] to make corrections.

    Progress Indicators

    You can play using any of three Indicator Modes for revealing clues:

    Tip

    For long words, start by entering shorter words. That way you can get valuable indicators for the first few letters.

    Options

    The options menu gives you a variety of styles of play.

    The computer uses your options to set the criteria for selecting each secret word. The level, length and indicator style will affect the maximum score and its rate of decay.

    English Dictionary

    Here are some facts about words in the English dictionary:
  • it contains over 115,000 full words (no abbreviations or acronyms)
  • words are in all tenses and forms
  • contractions (eg can't, doesn't) are not included
  • there are no hyphenated words or phrases (only single words)
  • since this is a family-friendly game, no vulgar words will be generated
  • secret words may be generated in both American and British spelling forms
  • for example, you may get COLOR or COLOUR
  • accepts either form of spelling in your guesses
  • includes about 300 proper nouns such as common holidays, countries, oceans, continents, US states, Canadian provinces, days of the weeks, planets, months
  • examples of proper nouns: Canada, Christmas, Europe, Atlantic, Illinois, Quebec, Jupiter, Sunday, August.
  • proper nouns will not be presented as a secret word
  • you may enter a valid proper noun as your guess.

    Clues

    The [Clue] button will give you a single clue about the word. A clue will be randomly generated and will take the form of any of these examples:
  • the 3rd letter is a vowel.
  • the 2nd letter is either G,A,X
    A clue costs a very expensive 20% of your original maximum score.

    Meaning of Word

    After the secret word has been found or revealed, the [Meaning] button can be pressed to yield the definition of the word. This opens a new browser page using Dictionary.com as the source.

    Scoring

    Here are the facts about scoring:
  • Your current score is shown at the top right and is constantly decreasing.
  • You have 12 chances to guess the secret word.
  • The sooner you guess the word, the higher your score will be.
  • Spelling counts - misspelt words or hazardous non-words decrease your score by 10%.
  • Your choice of options affects the maximum score.
  • Top scorers will be maintained on a weekly basis.

    Exception: to discount lucky guesses, if you guess the secret word within the first two attempts, your attempt will not be honoured.
