Progress Indicators

• High-Low: arrows indicate if the target letter is higher or lower than your letter. No arrow means the letter is correctly placed.

  The first guess is "CATTLE" and reveals that C,A,T are too low, the second T is too high. L and E are correct letters since they are not marked. Using those clues the next guess of TUMBLE shows that the first letter must be lower than T but higher than C (from first guess), while second letter is between A and U, the third letter is still higher than T. The next guess is GARBLE but nothing really is gained from using that word. Narrowing down the words, DOABLE is picked and only the A is wrong. Finally DOUBLE is entered and it matches the secret word.

• Show Wrong Only: an "X" appears if a letter is in the solution but in the wrong place. No symbol means either the letter is in the right spot or is not present.

  The first guess is BUILDS and the only definite clues are that the word contains the letters D and S. SHOWED now tells you that the word also contains O and E. But since the letters S and D do not have X's, that means they are in the correct locations. This now tells us that the word starts with S, ends with D and contains O,E. WOUNDS gives some clues: the word contains N, and validates S????D. DESERT indicates that the second letter is E. So now we are looking for SE???D with a O and N someplace. NOSED just lets us know the all those letters are present. SENIOR seems to indicate the word is now SE?O?D, (since O cannot be anywhere else). By using the subsequent words, there are enough clues to guess SECOND as the secret word.

• Show Right and Wrong: look for right (checkmark) and wrong (X) symbols.

  Starting with a lucky guess of TABLES, we are informed of 4 letters T,B,L,E but all are in the wrong places. BLOATS tells us that the word definitely starts with B, and it also contains O. BOASTS locks in on the first 2 letters, BO???? followed by some combination of E,L,T BOBCAT doesn't really tell us much (the second B is a "red herring"). BODILY tells us we are looking for BO??L? BOOTED gives us more information: BO?TL? with E missing BOTTLE yields the secret word.

Options

• Language: choose the language of the dictionary. Current only English is available.
• Level: choose the level of difficulty for words, ranging from Easy (primary school words) to Scholarly (uncommon words).
• Word Length: selects the length of secret words from 3 to 15 letters.
• Indicator Mode: sets the type of clues to be generated in response to entering your word.
• Category: filter words by category, which narrows down the possible words. Currently there is no filtering in this version.

The computer uses your options to set the criteria for selecting each secret word. The level, length and indicator style will affect the maximum score and its rate of decay.
