The Global Speak and Spell Experiment!

The Global
Speak and Spell
Experiment

November 2005
"Global Speak and Spell" is to be a computerized equivalent of a spelling bee with a difference - students will hear words and phrases spoken in myriad dialects, accents and languages using the voices of children, teenagers and adults.
In the real world, everyone speaks with an accent, depending of course on who is listening. As such, students will learn how to recognize identical words and phrases that are spoken by different people. They will understand that various people can all say the same phrase slightly differently, yet it is still the same phrase.

The basis of the product will be to have students learn words and phrases both visually and audibly, then type what they've learned after the words have disappeared from their screen. A simple concept, yet different from other spelling games. Any language would be accomodated as well as all age groups and all grade levels.

Students with all learning styles will benefit from having the words spoken to them. Auditory learners should gain the greatest benefit. Visual learners will benefit from seeing the words presented beforehand. Tactile/Kinesthetic learners will benefit from remembering the answers they have typed.

At this time, we are seeking participants to become early planners, testers and eventual adopters of this product. You would need to have some time to record a list of grade-specific and theme-oriented words and submit them to a database we would manage. We would provide the game software and the management tool to record, submit and manage words. The software could initially be developed for MS/Windows clients then could be ported to Flash for all users.

In return, your school would get a free licensed networkable copy of the final program and will have access to all of the words and phrases submitted by all participants.

Please note that this is currently an experimental concept to determine the viability for a new learning product.

If you are an educator who is interested and able to contribute words and phrases to Global Speak and Spell, please contact us by e-mail. If this concept has sufficient global interest, we should be able to commence a beta trial early in 2006.
